Drug & Alcohol Support and Testing

Drug, Alcohol, or Substance misuse can endanger health and render employee’s incapable of safe working.  This may make affected employees a danger to both themselves and others.

Random and With Cause Testing

Alcohol and Drugs alter your mind and body and can hugely impair safe working-which is why we run regular drug & alcohol testing programmes for employees who have been identified as working in safety critical roles. As well as the regular programmes, managers can also request a “for cause” drug or alcohol test if an employee is suspected as being under the influence whilst at work.

The council recognises that the provision of a quality service is dependent on all of its employees, and the Drug and Alcohol Policy reflects the council’s desire to promote and maintain the safety, good health, and wellbeing of its workforce.

Managers must undertake a risk assessment to identify and justify safety critical roles within their service. Please use this latest simplified Risk assessment template to assist you. Simply work through it, turning the grey text black where it applies and add any other specific information that justifies the role as safety critical.

Testing Process

For full details on how the drug & alcohol tests are carried out please read the testing process document
