Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check

Determining whether a DBS check is required

There is no eligibility requirement for a Basic DBS check.

For a Standard or Enhanced DBS check, as an employer, there is a legal requirement to ensure the job role is eligible.

For posts where a criminal record check is identified as necessary, the job advert and/or job description shall contain a statement that an application for a DBS certificate will be submitted in the event of the individual being offered the position.

Please view the video on the left to learn how to use our new YOTI App, for on-line digital document verification.  Or if you prefer to read, here is a guidance document to follow.

DBS Update Service

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Update Service allows applicants to keep their DBS certificates up to date, and employers to check a DBS certificate.

  1. The service is for standard and enhanced DBS checks only
  2. Applicants will need to register for the Update Service
  3. Employees can buy into the Update Service, this costs £16 per year and this can be paid by debit or credit card
  4. Employees will need their certificate number and must register for the Update Service within 30 days of their certificate being issued
  5. To carry out a check with the Update Service Managers/ID Checkers must see the original DBS certificate before doing the check, to check the details on the certificate. They will need the applicant’s date of birth and certificate number to carry out the check with the Update Service Check. Once completed take a screenshot of the result and send it to the HR Service Desk to enable HR to record the outcome in iTrent
